Gardening Tips:

Keep leaves off of newly seeded areas

Plant bulbs for spring blooms

Plant pansies for fall, winter and early spring color

Begin clean-up of annual, perennial and vegetable gardens

Empty containers and store for the winter (remember clay and ceramic pots will crack if left outside where water can settle then freeze)

Leave a few spent roses
for new seeds to develop

Aerate and overseed lawns as needed-also a good time to fertilize

Pick large green tomatoes
just before frost

Dig Banana Tree and other tropical bulbs/roots to store for winter

Don't cut back cone flowers, black-eyed susans, and ornamental grasses.
The birds love the seeds!

Dear Gardening Friends,

October is a favorite month for many of us and so far the weather has been just about perfect! Let’s hope it continues for the rest a bit longer. I’ve noticed that a lot of gardens have perked-up and look beautiful with this cooler weather. The Encore roses along my driveway at home are blooming like crazy!

Right now, our garden center is full of mums, pumpkins in all shapes and sizes, corn stalks and other favorite reminders of fall and Halloween. A maze is set-up in one of the greenhouses, and we often hear laughter and squeals from the youngsters who find their way from one end to the other. This is a relaxing, fun time of the year for us and we truly enjoy the hundreds of children who visit. They’re always full of questions and are genuinely interested in learning about how things grow.

Our annual Pumpkin Festival is scheduled for this Sunday, October 26 from 11-3. This is a free, fun-filled day for families to enjoy. We’ll have several craft tables set up for our young visitors to enjoy, refreshments and other surprises. So if you’re looking for a good time, stop by. Just remember your camera! There are many opportunities for some great, colorful shots.

As we gear down for the year at our Telegraph store, our growing facility is beginning to fill-up again with a new crop for Spring 2009. Geranium cuttings will arrive any day-can you believe it! Many of the beautiful flowers you see in April and May will have started growing before Christmas. The hard part is deciding what to grow-there are so many choices, and a limited amount of growing space.

All of us at For The Garden what to let you know that we truly appreciate your business, and thank-you for being the best customers any business could ask for. We love growing and gardening, and really enjoy exchanging ideas and tips with all of our customers.

Happy Fall,

P.S. Our first ever “5 days to Save” Sale begins Wednesday, November 5th. Each day of the sale, ALL of the merchandise in the store will be discounted at a progressive rate.
